Jefferson basketball is heating up for both boys and girls as their seedings were just released for the Morris County Tournament.
The girls basketball team came in with the fifth seed. At an extremely strong 12-1 record, the Lady Falcons look to explore new territory and get to the county championship. The ladies are led by sophomore Ivana Tisma who, despite a strong season, has been riddled with injury in the early parts of the year. J-Town has also been carried by their center Amanda Nwankwo, who has stepped up offensively and defensively in Tismas’ absence.
Then there are the boys. The Falcons have been given the three seed in the tournament due to their recent play, wins against tough teams, and their history in the tournament. The biggest game on the resume for the Falcons was Mountain Lakes. The Falcons went up against the then 8-0 Lakers and upset them behind the great play of senior Mattie Johnson and senior Sean Whalen.
In the most vivid memories for most Jefferson sports fans is the heartbreak of last season. The Falcons lost in the Morris County Finals against West Morris in a heartbreaker at the buzzer. With hopes for their vengeance this year, they hope to catch fire and rally to upset West Morris on the same stage.
Jefferson isn’t new to dual gender success in the same sport. Last fall, both the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams ended up in the state finals as first and second seeds. The boys came away with a championship as the girls fell just short.
As the county basketball tournament approaches, both teams are ready to prove they are championship-ready.
