Swim Will Benefit Jefferson Township Fire Company 2
On June 30, Bridgette Hobart-Janeczko will attempt to swim the approximately 28.4-mile perimeter of Lake Hopatcong to raise funds and awareness for Jefferson Township Fire Company 2 (JTFD2).
In addition to providing fire protection to homes and businesses in the Lake Hopatcong section of the township, JTFD2 operates ice rescue, water rescue, and dive teams. Firefighters also offer ice rescue and water rescue training to other area fire departments. JTFD2 operates the only fire boat on Lake Hopatcong and provides the only fire protection to the lake’s islands.
Hobart-Janeczko will swim under the rules of the English Channel/Marathon Swimmers Federation. Solo swimmers wear a porous suit, cap, goggles, and no aids. They may not touch the bottom or any boat during the swim, but stop every 30 minutes for feeding while treading water.
Bob Janeczko, volunteer firefighter with Company 2, will serve as kayak escort and be responsible for navigation. A marine Garmin will be used to ensure that all pre-defined waypoints (approximately 300) are reached.
To view a map of the proposed course, visit the event website at www.swimlakehopatcong.com/jtfd2. The website also lists the estimated times of arrival at various points on the course for boaters and residents who would like to join the journey. Near real-time GPS positions via Spot Tracker will be posted online to monitor the progress of the swim.
A pilot and crew on a pontoon boat will assist and document the swim, with additional support provided by the JTFD2 public safety dive boat. Hobart-Janeczko plans to begin at about 3:00 a.m. and swim between 16 and 20 hours, starting and ending at The Windlass restaurant (45 Nolan’s Point Park Road, Lake Hopatcong).
A “dine and donate” landing party will be held on the day of the swim at The Windlass, where Hobart-Janeczko expects to arrive back in time to join the party. The restaurant will donate a portion of all proceeds to the event. Direct contributions to benefit Company 2 are being accepted at www.signmeup.com/JTFD2.
Swim Lake Hopatcong is run by Dogged Perseverance, a New Jersey nonprofit organization (501c3). It was established to introduce open water swimming to Lake Hopatcong and to raise awareness and funds for various local charitable organizations. The perimeter swim event is sponsored by www.livethelakenj.com.
