The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for unpowered, unmanned wooden cars. With the help of adults, Scouts build their cars from wood. The boys generally use kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels, and metal axles.

Each age group has its own set of races. First, second, and third place winners from each den receive a trophy. There are also awards for the best looking and most original cars in each den.

Members of a Scout’s family can enter a car in the sibling race. The top car in each den progresses to a second race against Scouts from the Lake Hopatcong section of town.
