The following students were chosen by their art teachers as Student Artists of the Month for December 2018. The Jefferson Arts Committee (JAC) recognizes young artists throughout the school year for outstanding work on class art projects.
- Blake Glamann – Ellen T. Briggs Elementary School
- Celine Covello, Julia Glenn – White Rock Elementary School
- Jackson Petrask, Caiden Walter – Cozy Lake Elementary School
- Harper Felch, Lorenzo Gonzalez, Victoria Wojtak – Jefferson Township Middle School
- Gabrielle L’Abbate, Mackenzie Rock – Jefferson Township High School
Jason Nicholas (chair), Carol Punturieri (president), and Jennifer Tamayne-Hettema (art teacher) represented the JAC Student Artists Committee at the December presentation.
The program was initiated by former president Jack Kelly more than a decade ago to recognize the talented artists in the township’s school district. Art teachers select one or two outstanding pieces from their students on a monthly basis during the school year and submit them to the Jefferson Arts Committee. The artwork is exhibited for one month at the library. The students, along with their families and friends, are recognized at an awards presentation with a certificate and a medal for outstanding achievement.
In June, the artwork selected over a seven-month period is displayed in the high school library/media center, where a reception is held for all student artists of that school year. The work of an invited artist is also on display, and the artist speaks to the children and their guests about his or her art career (or hobby). The district’s art teachers are welcome to attend, and many display their personal work.
The following Jefferson art teachers participate in the program: Jennifer Tamayne-Hettema (Cozy Lake, Milton, White Rock), Karen Frelinghuysen (Briggs, Stanlick), Denise Morando (Middle School), and Karen Correia, David DeVries, and Renee Simler (High School).
