John Formisano, the Newark cop accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife outside her Jefferson home in July, will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. This came after a judge ruled his competency to stand trial was in doubt.
State Superior Court Judge David Ironson said during the hearing in Morristown that because Formisano has been hospitalized at a psychiatric facility since the shooting, he has questions about the defendant’s mental capacity.
A psychiatrist or psychologist with the state Department of Human Services will evaluate Formisano within 30 days. If he is found incompetent, the prosecution could request that the judge compel Formisano to take medication or take other steps to become competent, according to prosecutors.
Formisano is currently hospitalized at the Ann Klein Forensic Center, a 200-bed facility in Trenton.
