Mayor Russell Felter and the Jefferson Township Council are pleased to announce that Jefferson Township will be offering a limited number of free radon test kits to homeowners, in the Township’s continued efforts to promote Radon Action Month.

In conjunction with the free test kits, a radon awareness program will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on February 13, at the Jefferson Township Public Library, 1031 Weldon Rd, Oak Ridge. Residents are invited to join the Jefferson Township Health Department staff as they discuss radon risks, simple ways to detect it, and how to mitigate radon gas in your home. Free Radon test kits will be available to Jefferson residents on a first come, first serve basis. To register, call the Jefferson Township Public Library at 973-208-6244.

The free radon test kits – as many as 200 of which will be distributed to residents in early 2018 – are part of a cooperative grant and promotion between the Jefferson Township Health Department and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The effort is designed to bring increased awareness to residents regarding the risks of radon, and to offer the public resources for testing and potential mitigation.

Radon is an odorless and colorless gas that can cause lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths nationwide every year. Of the 4,700 annual lung cancer deaths in New Jersey each year, as many as 250 are due to radon, according to estimates.

The Jefferson Township Health Department and experts in state and federal government, as well as leading scientific and medical agencies, agree that all homes should be tested for radon. With a simple charcoal canister test kit, like those being acquired for free distribution, homeowners can easily test for radon themselves. Jefferson Township residents who cannot attend the February 13 radon educational program should check the municipality’s website in early 2018 for information on the free test kits. For more information about radon risk, call the Health Department at 973-208-6120.
