This year marks the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War I. An armistice was signed on November 11, 1918 – the war ended at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Jefferson Township will observe Veterans Day on Saturday, November 10, at 11 a.m. The observance takes place at the Veterans Memorial at the municipal complex (1033 Weldon Road, Lake Hopatcong), with Mayor Russell Felter as the master of ceremonies.

The high school band and chamber choir will play a medley of military songs as a prelude to the observance. Colleen Van Oudenaren will lead those present in singing the national anthem.

The observance will include a talk by Brigadier General Alfred F. Abramson III, commanding general of Picatinny Arsenal. Members of American Legion Posts 245 and 423 will be honored for their years of service to our country and community, and a tree will be dedicated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Legion. Two Jefferson residents who lost their lives during World War I will be remembered.

A committee is collecting names of township residents currently serving in the armed forces in order to update the hallway plaques in the municipal building. To share a name, call Joanne Meyer in the mayor’s office at 973-208-6102 or Jack Kelly at 973-697-5957. If a name is already listed, a call is not necessary.

Following the observance, refreshments will be served in the municipal building. Note that parking is available on site and in the nearby recycling center, but is not permitted on Weldon Road. All are invited to attend the observance to remember and honor our veterans.
