The Jefferson Falcons went into this year’s Morris County tournament looking to redeem themselves after last year’s buzzer-beater loss to West Morris. It wasn’t to be, though, as Roxbury would come out on top by a 52-37 margin.

With a low scoring affair, the Falcons had three main scorers in Mattie Johnson who finished with 11, Sean Whalen who tallied 10, and Matt Moran, who finished with nine on three three-pointers.

J-Town jumped out to a strong start. Although the shooting wasn’t there, the Falcons’ ball movement and defense kept them around and helped secure a two-point lead going into the second.

The next quarter was when things would turn bad for Jefferson. Roxbury turned the switch on the Falcons defensively, forcing turnovers and easy points. Going into half, it was Roxbury leading 25-21.

To start the second half, again the Gaels came out hot. Running out to a 10-point lead, the Falcons needed a spark. It was then senior Buddy Jacobus crossed a Gaels defender and drew an and-one foul for J-Town, stalling the Roxbury momentum.

That Falcons highlight would only be enough for a few seconds, though, as Roxbury continued to score and regain momentum.

With the win over Jefferson, Roxbury is set to face off against Delbarton in the county semi-finals next week.

As for the Falcons, their attempt for redemption in the tournament fell short, but they have the opportunity to get back on track at Mount Olive Monday, for an attempt to get hot just before the state playoffs.
