The Jefferson Falcons got a much needed football win over the Vernon Vikings on Friday, October 18, 34-0. The defense and the run attack were major points for the Falcons on their way to storming over Vernon.

Jefferson wasted no time to get going Friday night, as on the second play from scrimmage, a muffed snap by the Vikings, led to a Jeff Danyus recovery and Falcons ball, with good field position. Shortly after, running back Mike Gould would pile in his first rushing touchdown of the game, getting J-Town started with the early lead.

The Jefferson defense would continue to stand tall when the first play of the drive was intercepted by David Hanna and returned all the way inside of the Vikings five yard line. Yet again, Gould would rush in another TD on the first play, extending the Falcons lead to 13-0 after the first quarter.

After a Vikings turnover on downs, Jefferson retained the ball at the Vernon 47 yard line. That’s when Mike Gould rushed for his third touchdown of the first half. The rest of the quarter would include a series of punts, having the Falcons head into halftime with a 20-0 lead.

The Falcons’ route would continue in the third quarter with another Gould rushing touchdown, extending the Falcons lead yet again. In the final quarter, quarterback Bam Johnson got into the running times with a long third down conversion run, including multiple jukes to get inside the five yard line. The Falcons and Gould would stack on one more touchdown to cap a huge night for the junior running back.

“The line stepped up big time this week,” Gould said with no hesitation. “It’s been rough for me running lately but tonight they really stepped up and we took care of business.”

The Falcons 34-0 victory over Vernon was much needed after coming off three straight losses for the Falcons.

“Any time you win it feels fantastic, but for us to put up a goose-egg against a team averaging four scores a game felt really good. Very proud of everyone coaches and players,” Coach Venturino said after the win. “We wanted to get the run game going a little bit. We have been relying on the pass game lately, and Bam (Johnson) has been awesome, but it is good to have balance which we showed tonight.

“Defensively we just really focused on getting the shutout and being aggressive this week, which we did. They put up points but we were just determined and ended up taking them down this week,” Gould exclaimed about the Falcons pestering defense this week.

The Falcons come back home next week for their senior night against West Milford with hopes to keep the good vibes going.
