Gould, a sophomore running back, scored the Falcons’ first two touchdowns of the game. In the first quarter, Gould raced 51 yards from the Vernon 49 to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. Only 45 seconds into the second quarter, Gould capped a 75-yard drive with a 10-yard scoring run. The rout was on as Jefferson built a 27-0 lead before the visiting Vikings scored their lone points of the evening on a 23-yard touchdown pass from RJ Mehr to Jon Kowalski with 32 second left in the first half.

In addition to the two scores by Gould, who had a game-high 134 yards on 14 carries, the Falcons blew the game open in the second quarter as senior Paul Monaco scored on a 1-yard run. Later he was the recipient of a 23-yard touchdown pass from Matt Johnson, effectively putting the game safely out of reach. A 14-yard touchdown run by senior Tyler Cole with 3:42 to go in the third quarter capped the scoring for the evening.

The Falcons kept the ball on the ground, rushing 31 times while requiring junior quarterback Johnson to put the ball in the air only five times, completing three – including the scoring strike to Gould. In total for the evening, JTHS outgained the Vikings on the ground by a margin of 228 yards to 64. The Falcon defense held Vernon to just 95 yards passing on 7 of 17 attempts from Mehr as the Vikings took to the air more frequently in an attempt to cut the deficit. The accomplishment is all the more impressive considering that Jefferson was playing without two of its most vaunted runners. Joe Batelli and Matt Cappello were both sidelined for the evening with injuries.

The win improves Jefferson’s record to 2-5 on the season and 1-3 in conference. Vernon is now winless in seven games this season, going 0-3 in conference. The Falcons will fly across Route 23 this Friday to face the West Milford Highlanders in a non-league game, with kick-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Last Friday, West Milford won 27-10 at Fair Lawn to improve its season record to 4-3.
