The Jefferson Falcons are heading up Glen Road to Sparta for their next match-up against the Sparta Spartans. Both teams were 3-0 heading into Week 4, and both teams were unable to remain undefeated. Both Jefferson and Sparta hope to bounce back after losing this past week.

Jefferson is returning from their devastating loss at home to Montville, 44-16. The Falcons fought hard and were leading at halftime, 16-8. However, injuries and other mishaps for the Falcons caused a loss in the second half.

The Falcons may have to go without their star junior running back Mike Gould who suffered a shoulder injury against Montville. Gould has been carrying the workload running the ball for the Falcons and has also been leading the J-Town defense. The Falcons may have to rely on other running backs such as sophomore Mike Bencivengo and junior Mike Studnick. Jefferson also will need to replace their senior slot receiver Matt Capello, who has reportedly torn his ACL. This will make the Falcons’ offense fall even more in the hands of senior Matt Johnson, who has held the reign at quarterback this season.

The Sparta Spartans are also coming off a tough loss against Ramapo this past week, 41-14. Sparta is hoping to bounce back from their last loss and hope to keep their season going well.

The X-Factor for the Falcons is going to be their running game. Although Johnson has been impressive thus far, he has had the help of Gould breaking down defenses. This is a question mark that will need to be answered if the Falcons are going to pull off a win on the road.

The Jefferson-Sparta rivalry has been going strong for quite a while. In all sports, the two teams battle long and fierce. The roudy Jefferson Falcons Nest crowd will surely be making their way to Sparta for this battle of neighboring towns.

Kickoff starts at 7 p.m. at Sparta’s new turf football field on Friday, October 4.
