Community Chorus Director Position Open

The Jefferson Township Community Chorus, formed in February 2001 by the Jefferson Arts Committee (JAC), provides an opportunity to individuals who love to sing, are looking for a venue to harmonize with others, enjoy the challenge of learning new musical arrangements, and want to entertain the public. The JAC is seeking a new director to lead the group. The stipend position will be available starting in the fall.

Prospective candidates should be aware that the chorus presently rehearses 10 months each year (September–December and January–June) from 7:30-9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays in the music room at the middle school (1000 Weldon Road, Oak Ridge). If the school district is closed for any reason, rehearsal is canceled. Membership can fluctuate with the season, but averages 20-30 men and women.

Through the years, the chorus has sung traditional folk songs, Broadway show tunes, sacred music, ethnic tunes, popular songs, and classical music. The director is responsible for planning, preparing, and presenting two choral concerts annually: in the spring (June) and during the holiday season (usually the first Sunday in December). The group also performs at other special events. The director is assisted by a steering committee that handles publicity, programs, refreshments, and other administrative duties.

A candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in the field of music, preferably vocal; choral experience is preferred. Candidates with experience as a choir/chorus director in a church or other private entity but without a degree are welcome to apply as well. The candidate must be able to patiently teach music to adults who are not professional musicians but very talented, willing to learn, and enthusiastic. If a candidate plays piano/keyboard, that is an advantage and should be noted on the résumé. A stipend will be paid for each rehearsal and performance. The position is open as of September 15, 2018.

Interested parties are invited to submit a letter of intent and a résumé to the Jefferson Arts Committee, Chorus Director Position, PO Box 2604, Oak Ridge, NJ 07438. The information can also be emailed to artscommittee@jeffersonarts.org.
