The Jefferson Striders, a recreational track program for children in grades K-8 sponsored by the Jefferson Township Recreation Department, will compete in the Lakeland Junior Track and Field League this spring. Competitions will take place with the Denville, Hopatcong, Mountain Lakes, Rockaway, and Roxbury recreation leagues.

This program will provide boys and girls with the experience needed to pursue track opportunities in high school. Weather permitting, it will start on Wednesday, March 27, at the high school media center (1010 Weldon Road) with a parent meeting at 6 p.m. followed by outdoor track practice.

Practices will begin at 6 p.m. under head coaches Cheryl Heller for the K-2 instructional league (Wednesdays) and Susan Turdoff for grades 3-8 (Wednesdays and Thursdays). K-12 events include 50 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters, relay, and long jump, with meets held on Fridays. Parental help is mandatory at this level. Grade 3-8 events include 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, mile, shot put, long jump, and 4×100 relays, with meets held on Sundays. Parental volunteers are needed.

The $100 fee covers the cost of paid coaches, equipment, team T-shirts, and league expenses. Registrations received after April 12 will incur a $20 late fee.
