Jefferson Township has been ranked the 80th safest city in the United States for 2019 in a study by SafeWise, an organization dedicated to researching security solutions. In fact, 30% of America’s 100 safest cities are in New Jersey.
To identify the 100 safest cities, SafeWise reviewed the most recent FBI crime report statistics and census population data. Cities that fell below identified population thresholds or that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were excluded from the ranking system.
The evaluation is based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) in each city. If there was a tie, researchers also factored in the number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft). To level the playing field, the rate of crimes was calculated per 1,000 people in each city, making it easier to directly compare the likelihood of such crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations.
In addition, SafeWise conducted third party research of 5,000 U.S. residents to understand their attitudes and opinions on safety across six categories: violent crime, property crime, cyber/digital crime, health and wellness, environmental, and workplace safety.
