Jefferson Township High School alumna and resident Lori DeMaria-Bauer was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. It has spread to her spine, brain, liver, and adrenal glands.

A lifelong resident of the White Rock section of Oak Ridge, DeMaria-Bauer lives with her 88-year old mother, who depends on her for support. She graduated from JTHS in 1984 and has worked locally her entire life, with the past two years at Betsy Ross Diner.

DeMaria-Bauer had back pain for some time, but with no health insurance, she feared the potential cost of going to a doctor. Even with the Affordable Care Act’s mandatory insurance requirements and subsidies, insurance was too expensive. She applied for New Jersey Family Care, a publicly funded insurance program, but is still awaiting confirmation of insurance.

With the pain becoming worse, DeMaria-Bauer could not wait any longer and sought medical attention. Her doctor sent her for an MRI and she was immediately admitted to the hospital. There she learned the unfortunate news: She had cancer and it had spread to other organs.

DeMaria-Bauer is now going through radiation treatment, and chemotherapy will start shortly. She describes herself as an independent person, which makes it hard for her to ask for help. “But you find out who your friends really are, and I have been blessed, she remarked.

Her friends and co-workers have been assisting with transportation to DeMaria-Bauer’s daily radiation treatments. She is unable to drive because of the medication she must take for the pain. “I’m not going to give up,she told The Jefferson Chronicle. “I can’t give up!”
