Four years ago, the Jefferson Falcons High School boys soccer team was a .500 team at best. Fast forward to 2019, and the Falcons have a solid 14-1 record, and a three-year conference championship streak.
The senior class of 2020 boys soccer players were recognized for that turnaround and their excellence on Thursday at their senior night game against Wallkill Valley. The team was recognized with yet another victory on their fantastic season.
“They are a great group of guys. They really changed the culture for us, coming in when we were a below .500 team and now look at us,” coach Travis Gage said after the team’s 3-1 victory over Wallkill.
The senior class has not only won games and changed the way Falcons soccer has been played, but they have also influenced younger players and helped them develop properly.
“They all really work their butts off and get better everyday. Some of the seniors have become my best friends and I couldn’t be happier for what they’ve accomplished here,” said Kevin Leonard, who is a junior on the team. “We’re definitely going to miss them next year.”
How good was the class of 2020 compared to other classes? The best. This year’s senior class has accumulated 52 wins, giving them the most is JTHS history. This is one of the few individual and team records that will be graduating in June.
However, the senior class is not done with their business just yet. “We still have states,” senior Buddy Jacobus said after the game. The team was given the top seed in their bracket for their state tournament and with that, they will get to play on the turf in Jefferson during the hopefully long state run.
