Sheila De Young of Oak Ridge, who is attending Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, is one of seven medical students awarded the 2018 Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Scholarship.

The scholarships will be used for further medical education. MDAdvantage Insurance Company and the EJI Excellence in Medicine Foundation created the scholarship fund in 2009 to support healthcare education and retain medical talent in New Jersey.

“As healthcare leaders, we have an obligation to pave the way for our future healthcare providers so that they may continue the tradition of quality healthcare delivery and innovation in our state,” said Dr. Paul J. Hirsch, foundation chair. “The mission of the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards is not only to highlight the remarkable accomplishments of our honorees, but also to support the future of medicine in New Jersey,” he added.

The 2018 scholarships bring the total amount provided to 57 students over the past nine years to $670,000.

The award is named for Edward J. Ill, a New Jersey physician who was a pioneer in promoting medical education in ways that set the national standard. The sponsor, MDAdvantage Insurance Company, is a leading provider of medical professional liability insurance.
