The following students were chosen by their art teachers as Student Artists of the Month for May 2019. The Jefferson Arts Committee (JAC) recognizes young artists throughout the school year for outstanding work on class art projects.
Jeffrey Makepeace – Cozy Lake School
Liam Yaniga – Ellen T. Briggs School
Nina Maniago – Arthur Stanlick School
Brandyn Gall – White Rock School
Arlene Baez – Middle School
Hieu Nguyen – Middle School
Kelly Stuck – High School
Shane Conley – High School
The current honorees were invited to an awards presentation on May 8, along with their families and friends. The students were acknowledged with a certificate and a medal for outstanding achievement. Jason Nicholas (JAC Student Artist of the Month chair), Carol Punturieri (JAC president), Elisa DeYoung, and art teacher Karen Frelinghuysen presided at the ceremony.
The program was initiated by former JAC president Jack Kelly more than a decade ago to recognize the talented artists in the township’s school district. Art teachers select one or two outstanding pieces from their students on a monthly basis during the school year and submit them to the Jefferson Arts Committee. The artwork is exhibited for one month at the library.
Every June, all the artwork that was recognized over a seven-month period is displayed in the Jefferson Township High School Library/Media Center, where a reception is hosted by the JAC for all student artists in that school year. The JAC invites a guest artist who speaks to the children about his/her art career or hobby, and the artist’s own works are exhibited. This year’s guest speaker will be Jessica DeVries, who works in the fashion design industry. Many of the district’s art teachers, who are also invited to attend, display their work as well.
The following Jefferson art teachers participate in the program: Jennifer Tamayne-Hettema (Cozy Lake, Milton, White Rock), Karen Frelinghuysen (Briggs, Stanlick), Denise Morando (Middle School), and Karen Correia, David DeVries, and Renee Simler (High School).
