The Jefferson Township Recreation Department’s karate program will begin its next 10-week session on Monday, March 19, and continue through Monday, June 4. The program is open to school-age children, including kindergarteners, as well as adults.

The karate program has been running for 12 years through the Recreation Department, with instructors from the Jersey Judo Karate Academy of Kenvil headed by Sensei Rick Norris, a kudan (9th degree black belt). The staff includes more than 50 certified, fully trained black belts teaching the Isshinryu style, an authentic Asian martial art form. Students learn skills that help to develop coordination, balance, posture, endurance, self-confidence, and discipline.

Classes are held in the Community Lodge at Camp Jefferson on Weldon Road from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for grades K-4 and 7:30-8:30 for grades 5-adult. The program fee is $55 per person with a discount of $10 for each enrolled sibling.

Registration must be completed online through Community Pass. Log on to and use Jefferson Township as the community/organization. Those with existing Community Pass accounts should enter their login and password, choose the activity under the season “Winter-Spring 2018,” register, and pay the class fee. If the login or password is forgotten, the system allows recovery and reset using the email address (or call the Recreation Department for a temporary password).

Adults may establish a Community Pass account by following the prompts, and then adding the child’s name. Email confirmation will be sent automatically after registering and making a payment. For assistance, contact the Recreation Department office at 973-663-8404 x4 or

Full payment must be received no later than five business days after registration is completed or the first class on March 19, whichever comes first. Otherwise, a late registration fee will be applied or the registration may be canceled. For online payment at checkout, use a Mastercard, Visa, or Discover credit card (subject to a 2.65% bank fee). Alternatively, select “Send Payment” at checkout for one of the following options: drop off a check, cash, or money order at the Camp Jefferson office; or mail a check to the office postmarked within five business days of registration (do not mail cash).
