Student Artists of the Month have been selected for November through a program sponsored by the Jefferson Arts Committee (JAC). The following students were chosen by their art teachers for outstanding work on a class art project:

  • Alexa Wrona – Briggs Elementary School
  • Ava Papageorge – Stanlick Elementary School
  • Julia Katz – Middle School
  • Nathaniel Maniago – Middle School
  • Emma Nguyen – Middle School
  • Yasmeen Mohammed – High School
  • Katelyn Wilsusen – High School

Karen Correia, Elisa DeYoung, and Jason Nicholas represented the JAC Student Artists Committee.

The program was initiated by former president Jack Kelly more than a decade ago to recognize the talented artists in the township’s school district. Art teachers select one or two outstanding pieces from their students on a monthly basis during the school year and submit them to the Jefferson Arts Committee. The artwork is exhibited for one month at the library. The students, along with their families and friends, are recognized at an awards presentation with a certificate and a medal for outstanding achievement.

In June, the artwork selected over a seven-month period is displayed in the high school library/media center, where a reception is held for all student artists of that school year. The work of an invited artist is also on display, and the artist speaks to the children and their guests about his or her art career (or hobby). The district’s art teachers are welcome to attend, and many display their personal work.

The following Jefferson art teachers participate in the program: Jennifer Tamayne-Hettema (Cozy Lake, Milton, White Rock), Karen Frelinghuysen (Briggs, Stanlick), Denise Morando (Middle School), and Karen Correia, David DeVries, and Renee Simler (High School).
