A man was killed when his dump truck overturned on Route 15 North near Weldon Road on Thursday, police said.

Officers responded to the area of Route 15 North and Weldon Road at 2:10 p.m. for a report of an overturned dump truck. Upon arrival, officers found the driver of the vehicle was trapped inside of it.

Officers were able to extricate the driver from the vehicle. He was later identified as Gilberto Salazar, 70 of Ledgewood, NJ.  No other occupants were inside the overturned truck. Salazar was transported to St. Clare’s Hospital, Dover where he was pronounced dead.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.  The Jefferson Township Police Department was assisted by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and Morris County Sheriff’s Department in the processing and investigation of the crash.

The right lane of Route 15 North and exit to Weldon Road were closed for several hours after the crash, due to fuel on the roadway.   Morris County HAZMAT, Jefferson Township Fire Company #2, the Jefferson Township Rescue Squad, Picatinny Arsenal Fire Department and NJ Department of Transportation also assisted at the scene with the crash and cleanup.
