The Challenger Soccer Program for special needs players is accepting online registrations for its 11th fall season. The program is for boys and girls ages 5 to 18 (or completion of high school) and young adults/adults ages 19 to 35 with physical or mental challenges. Registration is open to township and non-township residents, and participants can join at any time.

Scott Luker of Jefferson will return to manage the league, which is sponsored by the township’s Recreation Department. Games will be played on the large side field of Fireman’s Field (750 Route 15 South, Lake Hopatcong). The first game takes place on Saturday, September 15, at 10 a.m. There will not be a game on Saturday, October 20. Depending on weather, if the program continues into early November, games will be held on November 3 and 10 at Chamberlain Field (48 Chamberlain Road, Oak Ridge, in the Water’s Edge development).

The Challenger program offers special needs players the chance to participate in one of the most popular sports worldwide. They will use the same equipment and rules as in any soccer game, with the exception that they have the option to use the “buddy” system for assistance. Everyone on the roster plays in the game, and no score is kept. Thanks to fundraising efforts, the registration fee (for jersey, cap, and award) will again be waived for this season.

Registration is online through Community Pass at https://register.communitypass.net/reg/index.cfm. Follow the prompts to register or set up an account through the Jefferson Township community. Choose Summer/Fall Season 2018 to register. As there is no fee to participate, there will be no amount due, but registrants must go through the screens and click on Finish.
